Evaluation of Original and Enzyme-Modified Fique Fibers as an Azo Dye Biosorbent Material

As natural fibers, low-cost biosorbents have proven to be an effective and clean tool remove textile dyes from wastewater. In this research, the Reactive Black 5 removal ability of original enzyme-modified fibers were assessed. A fiber extracted a Colombian fique plant (Furcraea sp.) was employed. The effects protonation with different solvents dye solution pH on RB5 evaluated. biosorbent chemical composition modified using commercial enzymes pectinase, ligninase, xylanase. point zero charge (PZC) material measured, capacity three determined. Fiber 0.1 M HCl 2.4 increased elimination 49.1%. change in led reduction PZC 5.5 4.7–4.9 range. Pectinase-pretreated presented highest 66.29%, representing 36% increase removal. Although showed ability, its enzymatic modification changed distribution surface, improving capture molecules. Enzyme can applied obtain new functionalities for as materials.
